1851
- Dr. Ernst Schering purchases the "Green Apothecary" in Berlin and begins to develop and sell pharmaceutical products for various common complaints.
1880
- Schering pharmaceuticals are being sold in the U.S. under the name of Schering & Glatz -- Schering's distributor until World War I, when the company's U.S. operations were nationalized by the U.S. government.
1928
- Schering Corporation is incorporated in New York City.
1933
- Schering moves to East Orange, N.J. Two years later, Schering becomes incorporated in N.J.
1942

- Schering is once again taken over by the U.S. government following the United States' entry into World War II.
1948
- Schering creates the antihistamine TRIMETON (pheniramine maleate).
1949
- Schering creates the antihistamine CHLOR-TRIMETON (chlorpheniramine maleate), which later becomes the world's leading prescription antihistamine.
- Based on CHLOR-TRIMETON, Schering develops CORICIDIN (chlorpheniramine maleate and aspirin), a prescription drug for the relief of cold symptoms.
1952
- The U.S. government divests itself of Schering and Schering becomes a public American company.
1955
- Schering discovers and develops the corticosteroids METICORTEN (prednisone) and METICORTELONE (prednisolone), giving Schering Corporation unquestioned leadership in the corticosteroid market.
1964
- Schering pioneers the discovery and breakthrough development of GARAMYCIN, a unique aminoglycoside antibiotic. GARAMYCIN was introduced in cream and ointment forms in 1966 and in an injectable form in 1969.
1969
- Schering discovers and develops EULEXIN (flutamide), the first non-steroidal antiandrogen effective against prostatic cancer.
1971
- Schering Corporation, now a global research-based pharmaceutical firm, merges with Plough, Inc. Headquartered in Memphis, Tenn. Plough, Inc. -- a mass merchandiser of popular consumer products -- was founded in 1908 and had evolved into a worldwide company.
1979

- Schering-Plough acquires the rights to alpha-2 interferon (INTRON A) -- one of the first products derived from biotechnology -- from the genetic engineering firm Biogen N.V. (Today, this successful anticancer and antiviral drug is approved in more than 82 countries for over 20 indications.)
- Schering-Plough purchases Scholl, Inc., the world's foremost producer of foot care products.
1980
- Schering-Plough synthesizes and develops CLARITIN (loratadine), a highly successful once-daily nonsedating antihistamine.
1982
- Schering-Plough acquires DNAX Research Institute, a biotechnology organization in Palo Alto, Calif. that conducts pioneering research in molecular and cellular immunology. (This alliance, together with Schering-Plough's investment in INTRON A and in genetic engineering, puts us in the vanguard of biotechnology today.)
1986
- Schering-Plough makes significant breakthroughs in cloning and expressing the genes of a number of promising lymphokines, including:
- interleukin-10 (IL-10), an immunosuppressive agent with potential for treating inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease), ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis; and
- LEUCOMAX (molgramastrim), a granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), co-marketed with Sandoz Pharma Ltd., for use with chemotherapy in promoting the production of white blood cells.
- This same year, Schering-Plough purchases Key Pharmaceuticals, which enhances our positions in the respiratory and cardiovascular markets.
1993

- CLARITIN receives U.S. marketing clearance for treating allergic rhinitis. (Shortly thereafter, CLARITIN became the world's No.1 antihistamine in terms of sales and Schering-Plough's largest-selling product line.)
1995
- CLARITIN receives U.S. marketing clearance for the treatment of chronic urticaria and posts $789 million in worldwide sales.
- Schering-Plough receives FDA marketing clearance for CEDAX, a new oral, broad-spectrum, cephalosporin antibiotic for the treatment of chronic bronchitis, middle ear infection and pharyngitis/tonsillitis.
1996
- Schering-Plough acquires Canji, Inc., a leading gene therapy company in San Diego, Calif. Canji currently serves as our research center for gene therapy -- a treatment approach holding significant scientific and medical potential for treating cancer and other diseases.
- CLARITIN-D, a once-daily formulation of CLARITIN combined with the decongestant pseudoepherdrine, receives U.S. marketing clearance from the FDA.
Our pharmaceutical advances began with hormonal therapies and have extended through significant breakthroughs in antihistamines, corticosteroids, antibiotics and, more recently, anti-infectives and antiviral products. Today, Schering-Plough is a global leader, holding top positions in all our markets.

Throughout the 1980s and into the '90s, Schering-Plough formed numerous alliances from early-stage research collaborations on promising compounds, to programs and licenses for new drug delivery technologies. Most recently, important agreements have been established with companies including:
- COR Therapeutics, Inc. -- to develop and commercialize a novel cardiovascular agent.
- Genome Therapeutics Corporation -- to discover new anti-infective agents active against drug-resistant organisms.
- ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc. -- for rights to develop and market its antiviral drug ribavirin as combination therapy with INTRON A in treating hepatitis C.
- Neurogen Corporation -- to develop drugs for treating neuropsychiatric disorders.
- Human Genome Sciences, Inc. -- to utilize the Human Genome Sciences human cDNA database to discover disease-associated genes and develop novel medicines and gene therapy products, with an option to obtain exclusive licenses for specific gene products identified for use as protein therapeutics.
